YGGDRASIL OS

Nine Worlds.One System.

Yggdrasil OS is an operating system in development. Privacy and security are its foundation.

The trailer shows Yggdrasil OS booting up. It gives an impression of the vision. It is not a demo of today's state.

Privacy by Default

Yggdrasil is a flexible operating system with binding protection rules for applications, data and connected systems. Privacy and security form the foundation, from the personal device to servers, networks and industrial use.

Yggdrasil OS starts from one question: what would an operating system look like if you rethought it from scratch today, with AI?

  1. Your data. Your control.

Protection rules bind applications and data. They are not a setting you have to hunt for.

  2. A system the way you need it.

You describe what you need in conversation. The matching working environment follows from that.

  3. Across device boundaries.

Storage, shared resources and AI-organised backups reach beyond your own devices. If you like, you share resources with others.

  4. Developed together.

Yggdrasil is meant to grow as a community: with wishes, experience, test devices and expertise.

These are goals of the vision. The development status shows what has been built so far.

Nine worlds, nine parts of the system

Each world stands for one part of the system. A world only lights up once that part is built, tested and approved by Gerald. The light follows the evidence, not the schedule.

  • Glowing: built, tested and approved.
  • Glimmering: built, testing and approval still open.
  • Dark: not started.

  • Helheim glimmering
Rescue when everything else fails, without AI and without a network.
  • Niflheim glowing
The system can be halted and locked.
  • Svartalfheim glimmering
Your data and the way back to an earlier state.
  • Asgard glimmering
Approvals and rules about who may do what.
  • Vanaheim glimmering
New versions get activated, with a safe way back.
  • Midgard glimmering
    Your applications and data.
  • Alfheim glowing
    The interface you see.
  • Jötunheim glimmering
The border to the outside world.
  • Muspelheim dark
Development with AI. Comes in a later stage.

Development status

Yggdrasil OS is in development and not finished. Development runs in eras, named after gods of Norse mythology. Each era is a completed stretch with a documented result. There are no fixed dates, on purpose.

We are in the Forseti era.

  1. reached

    Tyr erathe oath

Build order, base system and rules of the first attempt are set.

  2. reached

    Thor eraprotection

A secured build environment protects the development computer.

  3. reached

    Freyr erathe seed

A bootable base system with interface, login and a stop function is in place.

  4. in progress

    Forseti erathe test

New versions are tested in an isolated environment, approved and activated. Rescue works without AI and without a network.

  5. upcoming

    More

    More eras follow.

This is a snapshot from 19 Oct 2026. It does not imply a release or completeness.

Support development

Yggdrasil OS grows as a personal project. Your donation goes to Gerald Houché personally and pays for development time.

For everyone, with or without a donation

  • You get progress reports through the newsletter.
  • You can submit wishes at any time through the wish form.
  • You can see the current status on this page.

A donation is voluntary and without anything in return. It creates no stake in the project, no return and no tokens. There is no donation receipt, because Yggdrasil OS is not a non-profit project. We do not answer wishes bindingly, and we promise neither publication nor implementation.

Support with a donation

You will switch to PayPal, and the page opens in a new window. The recipient is Gerald Houché. PayPal's terms and privacy notice apply there. You decide the amount.

Become a partner

If your organisation wants to carry Yggdrasil OS over a longer period, this is the way. Contributions in kind and expertise are welcome too.

What partners get

We plan with twelve months of security. Partners receive progress reports and a summary of the wish list without names and contact details. We shape a regular exchange together with partners.

If you like, we name your logo with a short introduction. You can just as well support without being named.

We discuss scope, amounts and conditions case by case.

Wanted

  • Test hardware
  • Computing power
  • Expertise, especially security review

Who is behind it

Gerald Houché

Gerald Houché develops Yggdrasil OS. He has worked as a network and security administrator for 20 years.

„I stand for protection and privacy, and I want to build that from the ground up and pour it into an OS.“
